Because they depend on sea ice, krill, and stable marine conditions to survive, changes in penguin populations act as a natural early-warning system, revealing how climate change is reshaping the entire Southern Ocean ecosystem.
Oceanites' Work
Oceanites monitors penguin colonies across Antarctica to understand how marine ecosystems are changing. Its long-term population data helps scientists track trends linked to sea ice, food availability, and climate shifts, fueling research, policy decisions, and conservation efforts worldwide.
The Adopted Colony: Devil Island
Over the next year, Pudgy Penguins is supporting the monitoring of the Devil Island Adélie penguin colony near the Antarctic Peninsula. Home to over 21,000 nests as of the latest 2023 drone survey, it's one of the largest Adélie colonies in the region. While populations elsewhere have declined, Devil Island appears to be stable or growing, making it critical to understanding how Antarctic wildlife is adapting to a changing planet.
