A Dating Coach On The Couple She Was Sure Wouldn't Make It, And The One Thing He Bought That Proved Her Wrong

"I DO EVERYTHING I'M SUPPOSED TO"

I'll call him Dan.

He came to me alone, which is never a good sign. His girlfriend of four years had told him she was thinking about leaving. He was baffled. He walked me through his defense like a man reading from a receipt. "I never forget her birthday. I get her roses on our anniversary. Roses on Valentine's Day. What else does she want?"

I hear this every week. He thought he was describing effort. He was describing a schedule. Here is what I've learned about men like Dan. They aren't cold. They're on autopilot.

Somewhere around year two they found the minimum that kept the peace, and they've been repeating it ever since.

And the woman on the other side can feel the difference between being thought about and being ticked off a list.

"I DON'T NEED EXPENSIVE. I NEED EVIDENCE."

A week later she agreed to come in. I asked her what the roses meant to her. She was quiet for a while. "They mean it's February," she said.

Then she told me something Dan had never noticed. Every bouquet he had given her had gone in the trash within a week.

Four years together, and there was not one object in their apartment she could point to and say, "he gave me that."

"I don't need expensive," she said. "I need evidence."

I wrote that down. I've repeated it to clients ever since.

WHY BIGGER ROSES MAKE IT WORSE

I gave Dan one job. Give her something with no occasion attached, that shows you've noticed something about her, and that will still be there in a year.

He came back with roses. Bigger ones. Two dozen.

She put them in water, said thank you, and cried in the bathroom with the tap running. He had answered "you only do what's expected" by doing what was expected, in a larger size.
Think of it like this:

  • Roses: say "it's the date on the calendar." Gone in a week.

  • Bigger roses: say the same thing, louder. Gone in a week.

  • The Plush Bouquet: says "I noticed you." Still there next year.

WHAT HE FOUND WHEN HE FINALLY SCROLLED UP

I sent him away again. The second time, he'd done the work.

He told me she had been texting him the same cartoon penguins for years. Good morning penguins. Miss you penguins. Sorry penguins after a fight. He had answered nearly every one with a thumbs up.

She had been telling him what she loved every single day, and he had never once said it back.

He went looking for those penguins and found the Plush Bouquet from Pudgy Penguins:

  • Two plush penguins, Pax and Polly, holding a heart

  • Wrapped in soft fabric flowers like a real bouquet

  • 11.5 inches tall, so it fits on a desk or a nightstand

  • No water, no vase, no petals, and it never wilts

Her penguins, in a bouquet that would never go in the trash.

He gave it to her on a Tuesday, for no reason.

"HE NOTICED THE PENGUINS"

She told me about it in our next session, and she cried telling me.

"He noticed the penguins," she said. "He actually scrolled back and looked."

I want to be clear, because I'm a coach and not a saleswoman. A plush bouquet does not repair a relationship.

Those two did a lot of hard talking over the next few months.

But every repair I have ever seen starts with one moment where the other person feels seen. That bouquet was theirs. It's still on her nightstand, which is more than can be said for forty-eight roses.

THE PART THAT IMPRESSED ME

THE PART THAT IMPRESSED ME

This is why I tell the story.

Dan didn't stop there, and I hadn't asked him to do anything else.

A few weeks later he gave her the Perfect Pair Keychain. It's two small penguins, one pink and one blue, with magnets inside. They split apart, one for her keys and one for his, and snap back into a hug when they're together.

He told her: "Wherever we both go all day, these two end up back together at night."

She is the one who told me that line. She said it's the most romantic thing he has ever said, and he said it holding a keychain.

That is the shift I look for. The first gift can be a fluke. The second one, the one nobody prompted, tells me a man has started paying attention on his own.

They're still together. I was wrong about them, and I've rarely been happier about it.
